Project: Leaking bath and shower repair at Mona Vale

shower leak repairs mona vale

Northern Beaches waterproofing and leaking shower repair.

The waterproofing problem at this home at Mona Vale was caused by water leaking behind the wall taps along with the wall to bath join.

Detecting the waterproofing problem

In this older style bathroom, the shower was located over the bath. Each time someone had a shower, water was leaking behind the bath and into the wall cavity.  Additionally, water was leaking from the taps into the wall behind the shower.   This job was a dual waterproofing problem.

During. Two coats of polyurethane waterproofing were applied to provide an impenetrable waterproof barrier to protect the wall.

Fixing the leaking shower and bath

To rectify the problem we had to remove the existing tiles behind the shower and the first row of tiles around the bath.  Remnants of the old waterproofing, although very minimal, was also cleaned up.

After thoroughly cleaning the area, we then applied two coats of polyurethane waterproofing to the wall behind the shower and the first row of tiles around the bath. This provides an impenetrable waterproof barrier protecting the wall substrate, even if the tile grout and silicone fails at any time in the future.

After the waterproofing polyurethane had dried completely, the tiler retiled the exposed area. He then reinstated the shower and bath taps.

Signs you may have a waterproofing problem

  • Smell : If you can smell mildew then this is usually due to dampness caused by a leak and is rotting timber and wall materials.
  • Walls : Water damage can cause the wall material to swell and contract causing walls to warp.
  • Skirting boards : Swollen skirting boards are a typical sign that water is penetrating behind the wall. You may also notice skirting board paint peeling or discolouring.
  • Stains : Water damage will create visible stains on walls.
  • Bubbling paint : Moisture commonly causes paint to bubble as the water prevents the paint from adhering to the wall.
  • Tile grout : Tile grout may become crumbly and disintegrate due to constant moisture. Due to this, tiles may even start coming off the walls.
  • Doors : Water causes timber to swell and contract. You may notice doors become stuck and are harder to open and close.
  • Silicone : Silicon products used to “plug” gaps, seal joints and repair cracks are usually only a temporary fix. Deteriorating or mouldy silicone can be a sign that your shower is leaking.
